Welcome to the Château de Montautre website!
Located nearby La Souterraine at the Creuse and Haute-Vienne boarder, this multi-millennial site is far from having revealed all its secrets. We would be delighted to let you discover the progress of our investigations during a visit that you can extend with a stay in a bed and breakfast.
Our objective ? Share our enthusiasm for this place rich in history and wonderfully preserved.
History
Observation post located overhanging a small valley of a tributary of the Semme river and benefiting from several natural springs, the site of Montautre has been occupied since Neolithic times.
The vestiges of the Gallo-Roman period are numerous and would come, according to tradition, from a temple dedicated to Mercury (columns, funerary chests, millstone, terminal, etc.).
It was at the end of the Hundred Years War that the construction of the Château de Montautre by the Mondin family - recognized as noble by Louis XI in 1461 - began, to end with the construction of the staircase tower in 1550. This family of a simple squire to the King paid homage to Baron de Fromental and rose following the promotion of François Mondin de Montautre to the court of François I, then Henry II, as a gentleman in charge of the royal pack hunting dogs.
The continuity of the possession of Montautre by the Mondin family and its direct descendants until the year 2000, the preservation of all external aggressions and the complete conservation of the archives of the castle since 1403 make it an extremely rich and detailed example of life of the lesser nobility of the County of La Marche.
Through the testimonies kept on site, we propose to share these 6000 years of history as well as the progress of research carried out with established experts to better understand the different periods of life in Haut Limousin
